Chania Airport is situated on the Akrotiri
peninsula about 6 miles to the the north-east
of the town of Chania which is in the north-west
of the Greek island of Crete in the Mediterranean.
The airport is one of the two main airports
on Crete, the other being Heraklion. Of the
two, Chania is the secondary, with only 95,000
passengers flying to the airport from United
Kingdom in 2008 compared with nearly ten times
that number flying to Heraklion. The airport
is also known as Chania International Airport,
"Ioannis Daskalogiannis" in honour
of the eighteenth century local hero who led
a Cretan rebellion against the Ottoman Empire.
